Cherrystone Family Camping Resort

If you are camping you will want to visit this beautiful campground located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This is one of the best on the east coast and provides many amenities for young and old alike. We have camped here many times and have never been disappointed. Take Townfield Drive off of Route 13 (which runs the length of Eastern Shore) for about one quarter mile. Keep to the right and stop by the office to check in. Once checked in continue to the guard shack where you will be presented with a map of the campground and directions to your location.

The site sizes range from small to large depending on your location but overall they are large enough that you do not feel like a sardine in a can. There is a section of the park that is for permanent residents and that is also well maintained. Although most sites are wooded the ground is clear and all have grass (except for the new ones along the beach).

Once set up it will be time to explore the campground. Take your time because there is a lot to see. Cherrystone is located on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and the beaches are very well maintained. Pets are welcome but please read the “Pet Policy” on their website. There are two dog walks and a dog beach. We take our dog each time and have never had any problems.

It will pay to make reservations as far in advance as you can during peak season and no drive through to check out the campground is allowed most days. The staff has always been friendly, courteous and very professional with our visits. You can rent a golf cart if you like but do this before your arrival on busy weekends. We generally bring our bikes in order to get the most out of this campground (yes it is big).

Nearby is Cape Charles, Va., a beautiful old town also on the Chesapeake Bay that provides a little piece of Americana.  It’s about five miles away and there is a trolley that will take you from the campground and back. We find ourselves going into town each time to walk Main Street and enjoy the shops. Maybe it is really just to get back to a time when life was a little bit simpler.

We have used Cherrystone many times as our basecamp for exploring the Eastern Shore and even into Maryland. Within one and a half hours you can be in Chincoteague and Assateague Island (where the wild ponies are) or stepping on a boat taking you to Smith Island in the middle of the Bay.
